+++ Kian Upclose Interview +++

This man has it all. He’s not only the lynchpin of one of the world’s biggest bands, but he’s going out with the sexiest woman in UK soaps (that’s official). We caught up with him at the British Soap Awards 2005.

You’ve come to support Jodi, but are you a soap fan?
Yeah, obviously when I started going out with Jodi I started watching Hollyoaks.
Before that I never really had time to sit down and watch it on a nightly basis but obviously when Jodie got involved I tried to get in there and tried to watch it as much as I possibly could.
She’s super in the show and I’m delighted for her that she’s won. I think it’s brilliant.

Did you help her?
No. In a sense I suppose, but no. She is who she is. She’s a great actress and she’s a beautiful girl. I’m delighted that she won sexiest female – it’s something that she really didn’t expect and I’m really, really happy for her and I think she definitely deserves it.

Do you get jealous when you see her scantily clad on screen?
Not at all.
She’s my girlfriend, she’s nobody else’s girlfriend so I’m definitely not jealous.

Did you help to choose her dress?
She actually chose it herself before I even got involved. I came over to London last week and it was there and it was a beautiful dress. She asked me what I thought and I said ‘yeah, it’s perfect.’

What’s the story about the Westlife boys fighting?
It’s just another story. When that one came out that was one story that nicked us off a small bit because it was completely untrue.
The thing that annoyed us was the source that they said they had it from was a fan in a hotel in London where we had stayed and they said it was me and I don’t actually stay in that hotel. I live in London and I’ve got my own apartment there, so it was completely fabricated.

What does the future hold for you boys now?
We’ve got a new album coming out this November. We’re very excited about it. We don’t have the name for it yet because we’ve just started recording song at the minute.
At the minute we’ve got about 10 songs which we’re really happy with. We believe that they’re some of the best material we’ve had since the early days.
It’s back to old school Westlife – the mid-tempos, the power ballads and just good pop songs.

Do you guys still get on well with Ronan Keating and would you like him to join you on stage?
We’re still very good friends with Ronan. There has never been any talk about us getting together or anything.
But he’s a really good guy and he’s a really good singer and he was very good to us when we started so why not?

Would you let Brian back in?
That’s a tough one.
There’s never been any talk – I don’t think Brian has any interest in coming back in. I think he left for the right reasons. I think it’s made Westlife a stronger band because when Brian left, we realised what we had then.
The fear of it going away was enough for us to realise what we had. We’re very, very, very strong with four people and we really enjoy being in the band.
If Brian wanted to come back, it would be a very strange scenario. I can’t imagine that he would, and we would never rule it out again. He’s a guy who shared five years with us and he’s a very good friend and he’s a great guy.

Do you get ribbed for having Jodi on your arm?
Not really. Everybody that knows me knows Jodi really well at this stage. They know what type of person she is.
She’s very down to earth, she’s very easy-going girl. She doesn’t play up the publicity. She just loves what she does.
We don’t look at ourselves as anything other than I do what I do and she does what she does.

So when’s the wedding day?
Not for a very long time.
We’re both very young and we’ve both got a lot of career things in our brains. I don’t think it’s something that we’d look at for another four or five years to be honest.
